Overview

This is switchback mathematics: 97 stone and dirt turns carved into the granite wall above the Valley, gaining nearly 3,000 feet of elevation with very little mercy. The trail starts in oak woodland near Camp 4 and climbs steadily through mixed conifer forest before emerging onto granite slabs near the waterfall's edge. Most people underestimate both the physical demand and the time commitment. Plan on 6-8 hours round trip for the full route.

The payoff justifies the punishment. Standing at the top of Upper Yosemite Falls puts you at the source of one of the world's great waterfalls, with the entire Valley spread below and the High Sierra rising to the east. During peak flow in late spring, 2,400 gallons per second pour over the lip—a volume that transforms the experience from scenic to genuinely humbling.

What to Expect

The first mile climbs to Columbia Rock, a granite outcrop that offers the trail's first major views and a reasonable turnaround point for those testing their legs. This section gains 1,000 feet and typically takes 1-2 hours. Beyond Columbia Rock, the trail becomes more demanding as it continues up the granite face.

The route follows the historic engineering from the 1870s, with stone retaining walls and carefully graded switchbacks that have held up for nearly 150 years. Don't shortcut the turns—it causes erosion and frequently results in injuries on loose rock.

Water availability along the trail is limited. The Park Service recommends carrying 4 quarts per person, and that's not conservative advice in summer heat. There are seasonal streams early in the year, but by August most are dry.

The final approach to the waterfall requires careful attention. The granite near the edge can be wet and slippery, and the consequences of a mistake are severe. Stay on marked paths and well back from the edge, especially when the falls are running high.

Tips & Logistics

Timing matters more on this trail than most. April through June offers the most dramatic waterfall conditions, with peak flow typically in May. By August, the falls often reduce to a trickle or disappear entirely, though the views remain excellent.

Start early—ideally at sunrise. The day-use parking area at Yosemite Lodge fills quickly, and afternoon heat makes the exposed sections of trail genuinely miserable. The trailhead is on the western side of the lodge parking area, near Camp 4.

Winter conditions above Columbia Rock can be treacherous, with ice on the granite and snow covering the trail. The route stays officially open year-round, but anything beyond the first mile requires winter mountaineering skills and equipment from December through March.

No permits are required for day hiking, but dogs are prohibited on the trail. The granite sections offer little shade, so sun protection becomes critical during summer months. Many hikers bring lightweight gloves for the descent—the granite can be rough on hands during the long series of switchbacks down.
