View Sunset from Sunset Rock

Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks, CA

Sunset Rock is a broad granite dome above the Kaweah River canyon, reached by an easy 1.4-mile round-trip from the Giant Forest Museum through a mixed conifer forest of red fir, Jeffrey pine, sugar pine, and incense cedar. The rock is wide and flat with unobstructed west-facing views — a good place to be at dusk, if you bring a headlamp for the return walk. Parking at the museum is limited in summer; the Sequoia Shuttle is the practical choice.

Overview

Sunset Rock is a wide granite outcrop at roughly 6,400 feet in the Giant Forest, positioned at the edge of the canyon carved by the Middle Fork of the Kaweah River. The view is west and south — open to late-afternoon light and the canyon below. The rock surface is broad enough to spread out, and the trail to get there is one of the quieter routes out of the Giant Forest Museum.

This is also one of the few trails near the museum that passes through no giant sequoias, which makes it feel like a different ecosystem than the nearby Congress Trail or Sherman Tree area.

What to Expect

The trailhead is at the Giant Forest Museum on the Generals Highway. There is no parking at the actual trailhead; use the museum lot across the road. From the museum, the trail heads northwest through mixed conifer forest — red fir, Jeffrey pine, sugar pine, and incense cedar. The terrain is unpaved dirt with some uneven footing over 0.7 miles to the rock.

At the end, Sunset Rock opens onto a broad granite platform overlooking the Kaweah drainage. Views are unobstructed and the rock is flat enough to sit comfortably for an extended stay.

Tips & Logistics

If you're hiking specifically for sunset, leave the museum at least 90 minutes before the sun sets. Bring a headlamp — the return through the forest is fully dark after sunset.

Parking at the Giant Forest Museum fills fast in summer. The Sequoia Shuttle stops at the museum and is the practical option on busy days. The route is open year-round; winter and early spring can bring icy conditions. No permits required. Dogs are not allowed.
