Overview
The route splits into two distinct sections: a mile-long grind up Navy Road followed by a quarter-mile trail spur to the overlook. Navy Road is exactly what it sounds like — an active gravel service road that vehicles use daily. You're sharing space with park operations traffic, so stay alert and step aside when you hear engines.
The overlook sits at 700 feet above sea level, offering views of Santa Cruz Island's northeast coastline. It's not the island's most dramatic viewpoint, but it provides perspective on the island's scale and a sense of the backcountry that extends beyond the harbor.
What to Expect
From Prisoner's Harbor, Navy Road heads inland with a steady 600-foot climb over the first mile. The grade is consistent enough to be manageable but steep enough to earn the "strenuous" rating. The road surface is loose gravel with occasional vehicle ruts.
At the one-mile mark, you'll hit the Del Norte Trail junction. Turn right and follow the trail for another quarter-mile to reach the overlook. This final section is gentler terrain compared to the road climb.
During winter and spring, expect a wet creek crossing at Canada del Puerto right in Prisoner's Harbor. Water can be fast-moving and up to 2 feet deep depending on recent rainfall. If you're visiting during these seasons, bring shoes that can handle getting soaked or plan to ford in hiking boots and deal with wet feet for the climb.
Tips & Logistics
Water is essential — there are no sources along the route or at the overlook. Carry everything you'll need for the round trip, plus extra given the island's exposure and limited evacuation options.
The moderate difficulty rating assumes you're reasonably fit. The Navy Road climb is the workout portion of the hike, so pace yourself accordingly. There's no shade to speak of, making early morning starts advisable during warmer months.
Since you're dependent on Island Packers' ferry schedule to and from Prisoner's Harbor, factor in your boat departure time when planning the hike. Allow at least 3 hours total for the round trip and harbor exploration, though you can easily spend longer if you're combining this with other harbor-area activities.
The overlook connects to the broader Del Norte area — the backcountry campground is another 2.5 miles beyond the overlook for those carrying overnight gear. But as a day hike destination, the overlook provides a taste of Santa Cruz Island's interior without requiring the logistics of a backpacking trip.
