Overview
Trails in the Giant Forest and Lodgepole areas are often snowy and icy in winter. You can hike the plowed trails or travel established cross-country ski and snowshoe routes, which are marked with colored markers. The General Sherman Tree Trail is the only trail kept clear of snow, and traction devices on your footwear are strongly recommended there because of ice.
Gear and Programs
When the Wuksachi Lodge is open, snowshoes and trekking poles are usually available to rent and snowplay gear is for sale. The Giant Forest Museum sells a ski trail map and stocks warm clothing and water. Ranger-led snowshoe walks around the Giant Forest have typically run starting in mid-January, depending on snowfall, though they were not offered in 2025.
Know Before You Go
Winter routes cross wilderness with real hazards: changing weather, deep snow, open streams, and wildlife. Carry a map, warm clothing, sunglasses, and water, and tell someone your plans before you set out.
