Overview
Early island maps mark these volcanic caves within the ranch area as dairy caves. Without refrigeration, the caves held the lowest temperatures available, so ranchers stored dairy products in them. Doors were built across the entrances to keep out mice, foxes, ravens, and skunks. Today Townsend's big-eared bats sometimes roost in the caves.
