This CCC-era cabin puts you within walking distance of the Wishon Grove's giant sequoias without the hassle of tent camping. Built in the 1930s for Forest Service personnel, it now offers a base camp in the oaks and pines at 3,900 feet — complete with kitchen, hot water, and a fire ring outside for proper mountain evenings.

The Cabin

The two-bedroom setup sleeps six: a queen bed in one room, twins in another, plus a futon in the living area. The fully equipped kitchen handles everything from morning coffee to post-hike dinners, with a stove, refrigerator, microwave, and all the cookware you'd want. Hot showers and flush toilets mean you're roughing it just enough to feel like you're in the mountains without actually roughing it.

You'll need to pack linens, towels, and toiletries — think of it as a furnished apartment that happens to sit in the Sequoia National Forest. The picnic table and fire ring outside extend the living space when weather cooperates.

What to Know

At nearly 4,000 feet, expect afternoon thunderstorms and chilly nights even when days are warm. Snow dustings happen through fall and winter, so check conditions before heading up. The cabin sits at the entrance to Wishon Campground, about an hour from Springville.

Access to Sequoias

The real draw is stepping out your door to the Doyle Springs Trailhead. This path follows the Middle Fork Tule River north through the Wishon Grove, where you'll walk among giant sequoias without fighting for parking at more famous groves. The trail continues to Mountain Home State Forest and more big trees. Having a cabin as your base means you can hit the trail early before day hikers arrive, then return to a real kitchen instead of camp stove meals.
