TENT PEG GROUP

San Bernardino National Forest, CA

A single large group site for up to 40 people, Tent Peg sits at 5,800 feet in mature pine, oak and cedar forest between Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake. The dirt road access and gravel parking surfaces signal the semi-primitive nature of this spot, which serves as basecamp for off-road vehicle adventures and hiking in the San Bernardino Mountains.

The Camp

The campground consists of one group site that can handle up to 40 people and eight vehicles. You'll find multiple picnic tables arranged around a central campfire circle with grills, all set beneath a canopy of mature pine, oak and cedar trees. The gravel parking surfaces and dirt road access keep things rustic β€” this isn't a place for RVs or trailers expecting level, paved sites. Vault toilets are provided, but there's no drinking water, so plan accordingly.

The Draw: OHV Paradise

Tent Peg's real appeal lies in its position as an off-road vehicle hub. Trails radiate in all directions, accommodating both beginners and experienced riders. The Crab Creek trail crosses Deep Creek nearby, while the 9.7-mile Redonda Ridge Trail heads east from camp. West of the campground, you'll find the starting point for the 26-mile Holcomb Valley Road and the Crab Flat Loop Route.

Hikers aren't left out β€” the 4.5-mile Hawes Peak Trail winds through forest terrain, and the Crab Creek Trail connects west to Fisherman's Group Campground via Crab Flats Campground. These same areas offer snowshoeing and cross-country skiing opportunities during winter months.

What to Know

At $149 per night, this group site requires advance reservations and fills up during peak OHV season. Green Valley Lake sits six miles away for fishing, boating and swimming β€” the 9-acre lake gets regular fish stocking. The closest towns for supplies are Lake Arrowhead and Running Springs. Without water on-site, bring plenty for drinking, cooking and cleanup. The forest setting provides good shade, but also means wildlife encounters are possible.
