SILVER CREEK-TRUCKEE

Tahoe National Forest, CA

The Camp

The campground spreads along the Truckee River banks, with a few sites positioned to overlook the water. Seven sites are tent-only; the rest accommodate RVs and trailers. Each site comes with the standard setup: picnic table and fire ring with grill. Vault toilets and drinking water handle the basics.

The lodgepole pine and fir canopy keeps things relatively cool, though you're still in developed campground territory rather than wilderness solitude. Lake Tahoe Hospitality manages the facility for the Forest Service, so expect maintained but not luxurious conditions.

The River

Fly-fishing for rainbow trout draws serious anglers to this stretch of the Truckee. The river also sees its share of swimmers and tubers when the water warms up, though the Truckee runs cold even in summer. If you're here for the fishing, you're in prime territory.

Getting Out

Three major trails access the area directly: the Western States Trail, Five Lakes Trail, and Pacific Crest Trail. The Western States follows historic routes through the Sierra, while Five Lakes provides a shorter hike to alpine lakes. The PCT passes through for long-distance hikers and day-trippers alike.

Highway 89 puts Truckee 10 minutes north and Lake Tahoe 10 minutes south. North gets you Prosser, Boca, and Stampede Reservoirs for more water access. Olympic Valley sits to the south for mountain recreation. Truckee provides full services—restaurants, groceries, gas—when camp cooking gets old.
