The Cabin
The Poso Guard Station maintains its Depression-era bones with board-and-batten siding, but the interior has been updated with modern conveniences. You get electricity, hot water, a full kitchen with stove and refrigerator, and a furnace for cold nights. The bedroom holds a queen bed and twin, while the living room's hide-a-bed couch sleeps two more.
Outside, there's room to spread out. The property accommodates motor homes (no hookups), tents, and horses β this is designated equestrian camping. A picnic table and fire ring handle meals and evening gatherings.
The Setting
Perched among pines and oaks, the cabin looks out over the San Joaquin Valley and the Greenhorn Mountains. Tobias Peak rises to 8,300 feet nearby, topped with a fire lookout tower. The area hosts deer, cattle, golden eagles, and occasional condors.
Weather swings hard here. Summer temperatures hit the high 90s while winter drops to the 20s. Pack layers β mountain weather changes fast.
What's Around
The Trail of 100 Giants and Tobias Fire Lookout both sit an hour's drive away, making for solid day trips. Summer brings hiking, fishing, biking, and horseback riding options. Winter opens up skiing and snowmobiling terrain. The mountaintop location delivers excellent stargazing year-round.
You'll need to bring your own linens, food, and camping basics. The cabin provides cookware and dishes, but pack toilet paper, towels, and firewood for the outdoor ring.
