PIONEER TRAIL

Stanislaus National Forest, CA

Pioneer Trail handles the logistics of large group camping without sacrificing the Sierra experience. Set in the woods at 5,600 feet, two miles from Pinecrest Lake, it's built for church camps, family reunions, and scout troops who want lake access and mountain setting without the backcountry commitment.

The Camp

The three sites here split capacity between smaller and larger groups β€” sites 1 and 3 max out at 50 people each, while site 2 accommodates up to 100. Each comes with the group camping essentials: large campfire circle, picnic tables, and vault toilets. The wooded setting near Pinecrest Lake's southwest side puts you in classic Sierra Nevada forest without the elevation extremes.

No hookups or electricity, which keeps things simple. Pay showers are available within a few miles for groups that need them.

What to Know

Winter camping runs first-come, first-served, but the main season requires reservations for a reason β€” this is one of the few group camps with easy lake access in Stanislaus National Forest. Pets are welcome under Tuolumne County leash laws.

The 300-acre lake sits just two miles away, close enough for easy day trips but far enough to avoid the day-use crowds at your camp.

Nearby

Pinecrest Lake delivers the expected Sierra lake activities: rainbow trout fishing, designated swimming beaches, and boating. The 4-mile National Recreation Trail loops the entire lake on easy terrain β€” manageable for mixed-age groups.

Wildlife viewing includes the usual Sierra suspects: marmots, deer, squirrels, and coyotes. The location puts you between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite in the central Sierra Nevada, with views reaching both the high peaks and the Central Valley below.

Sonora Pass, the scenic highway that's been crossing the Sierra since 1852, runs nearby for groups wanting a mountain driving experience.
