NORDHEIMER GROUP SITES

Six Rivers National Forest, CA

Four group sites tucked into a Douglas-fir forest along the Wild and Scenic Salmon River, where remnants of old mining operations and homestead fruit trees hint at the area's past. Three sites center around grassy meadows; the fourth perches above the river with direct access for boaters and swimmers.

The Camp

Sites A, B, and C occupy large grassy meadows ringed by forest, each accommodating up to 50 people with vault restrooms, picnic tables, and fire rings with grills. Site D breaks the meadow pattern entirely β€” it overlooks the Salmon River with a short hike down to the water, making it the obvious choice for groups planning to raft, kayak, or swim. All sites sit on gravel roads and parking areas, with partial shade from the Douglas-fir and hardwood canopy above.

The setting carries traces of human history: fruit trees from old homesteads and mining remnants scattered through this remote stretch of the Salmon River corridor. A courtesy phone at the main campground entrance is your only connection to the outside world β€” cell service doesn't reach here.

What to Know

Group reservations are required for all four sites, though the main campground also offers single sites on a first-come basis for those traveling without a group. Spring through early summer is prime time for whitewater activities, when rafting and kayaking season aligns with higher water levels. The Orleans Mountain Trail begins nearby for groups looking to stretch their legs on something more substantial than the river access trail.

Boat trailer access to the river's edge is available through the main campground, but you'll need 4x4 capability to make it work. The Marble Mountain Wilderness sits adjacent to the campground, opening up 89 lakes for high country fishing and extensive trail networks for hiking and horseback riding.
