The Camp

Logger's six loops β€” Cross Cut, Iron Ox, Steam Donkey, Whistle Punk, Ox Bow, and Double Bit β€” stretch across ponderosa pine, Jeffrey pine, and fir forest dotted with sagebrush. Each site comes with picnic tables, fire rings with grills, vault toilets, and drinking water. An on-site amphitheater sits within walking distance via shoreline trail, though you can drive to it as well.

The sheer size means you'll have neighbors, but the reservoir setting and forest canopy keep things from feeling cramped. The dump station sits a quarter-mile from the entrance and costs $10 per use (credit cards only).

What to Know

With 240+ sites, Logger handles crowds better than smaller Tahoe-area campgrounds, but reservations are still required. The boat ramp and trailer parking sit less than a mile away, making this a solid base for anyone bringing watercraft.

Spring and fall are the official seasons here, which makes sense given the elevation and winter snow loads. Lake Tahoe Hospitality LLC operates the facility for the Forest Service.

On the Water and Trails

Stampede Reservoir offers boating, water skiing, swimming, and fishing for rainbow trout, brown trout, and kokanee salmon. The nearby Commemorative Emigrant Trail welcomes hikers and mountain bikers, while numerous OHV trails crisscross the surrounding forest.

Boca Reservoir adds more water options just 10 minutes south. Truckee β€” 30 minutes away β€” provides full services: restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations, and that crucial Interstate highway access. Lake Tahoe sits an hour south for those wanting the full alpine lake experience.
