The Camp

One oversized group site sits in dense pine forest, sharing an entrance road with the neighboring Oso Group Campground. The setup accommodates both tents and RVs (no hookups) with gravel and dirt roads leading to the parking area. Multiple picnic tables, grills, and a campfire circle with surrounding benches spread across the shaded but open site. About 15 vehicles fit, though with 75-person capacity, coordination matters for arrivals.

Flush toilets and potable water keep things civilized, but the infrastructure stops there—expect to handle group logistics on gravel without the polish of developed car camping.

What to Know

Reserve 12 months ahead for group sites, and the $362 nightly fee covers the entire site regardless of actual headcount. Spring and fall seasons avoid summer crowds while keeping weather manageable at this elevation. The campground shares its surroundings with various wildlife and bird species, so food storage protocols apply.

Nearby

The Santa Ana River Trail launches directly from camp—part of the ambitious route that will eventually connect mountains to Pacific Ocean when completed. Currently, it serves hikers, bikers, and equestrians looking for multi-use trail access. The Rio Monte Trail also starts here, ending at Rio Monte Panorama with views over the Santa Ana River Valley gorge.

Jenks Lake sits nearby for non-motorized boating and fishing—rowboats, canoes, and kayaks work the stocked rainbow trout, largemouth bass, bluegill, sunfish, and catfish. The Santa Ana River provides additional fishing opportunities.

Weekend educational programs run at Grayback Amphitheater on Highway 38 during summer months, hosted by the San Gorgonio Wilderness Association with area history and background.
