LAKESIDE (TRUCKEE)

Tahoe National Forest, CA

This group campground sits on Prosser Reservoir's northwestern shore, ten minutes north of Truckee in an open setting with scattered lodgepole pine and fir. It's built for water activities and OHV access — power boating with a 10-mph limit, direct trail connections to the Prosser Hill motorcycle and OHV system, and fishing on a mountain reservoir that doesn't get the Lake Tahoe crowds.

The Camp

Lakeside spreads across open terrain with scattered shade from lodgepole pine and fir trees. Some sites catch full sun all day while others offer limited shade — plan accordingly for summer visits. Many spots have reservoir views with the surrounding mountains as backdrop. Each site includes a picnic table and campfire ring, with vault toilets serving the campground.

The northwestern shore location puts you right on the water without the density you'll find at more popular Tahoe destinations. This is group camping, so expect to share the space with organized parties rather than individual families.

What to Know

Prosser Reservoir keeps a 10-mph speed limit, which makes it better for canoeing, fishing, and swimming than high-speed watersports. The boat ramp sits about a mile south near Prosser Ranch Group Campground, not at Lakeside itself.

OHV riders can access designated routes directly from camp, with the main Prosser OHV staging area two miles west across Highway 89. That connects you to Prosser Hill Motorcycle trail and the broader Sagehen Hills OHV system. The forest service emphasizes staying on established routes — apparently resource damage from off-trail riding has been an issue.

Nearby

Truckee's ten minutes south with full mountain town amenities: restaurants, grocery stores, gas, and historic sites along the railroad corridor. Lake Tahoe sits thirty minutes away if you want the bigger lake experience.

For more water, Boca Reservoir is thirty minutes east with additional boating and fishing, plus water skiing if you need more speed than Prosser's 10-mph limit allows. Stampede Reservoir Recreation Area and various hiking and mountain biking trails round out the local options, though the campground description doesn't specify which trails or their access points.
