The Camp
The campground spreads across a flat plain in the Stanislaus National Forest, with sites positioned near a creek. Each site accommodates up to 6 people, 3 tents, and 2 vehicles, with standard picnic tables and fire rings. The elevation means you're camping in genuine alpine country between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite, with views of snow-capped peaks stretching toward California's Central Valley.
Wildlife is regular company here β expect marmots, squirrels, deer, and a variety of birds moving through camp. The forest setting attracts coyotes as well, so secure food properly.
What to Know
The campground operates on a reservation system during its main season, but opens earlier and closes later on a first-come basis when snow conditions allow. Check current information before heading up, as weather changes can affect access dates.
This is high alpine camping at over 7,000 feet. Snow, rain, mud, and cold conditions can hit any time of year, even during summer months. Pack accordingly and have backup plans for weather.
Hot showers and laundry facilities are available at Lake Alpine Lodge nearby, along with firewood, camping supplies, and food at their general store. No electrical hookups at the campground itself.
Nearby
Lake Alpine provides the main recreation draw. The accessible Bear Valley trail follows the lakeshore and connects with the historic Emigrant Trail β the same route covered wagons took heading to California. You can hike, bike, or ride horses on this route.
Forest Service rangers run interpretive programs during summer months. Lake Alpine Lodge offers boat rentals plus restaurant and bar service. Day trip options include Big Trees State Park, Grover Hot Springs, Mercer Caverns, and Calaveras County wine country.
