The elevation keeps things cooler than the Central Valley below, and the location southeast of Porterville puts you in Giant Sequoia National Monument territory where the big trees grow.

What to Know

First-come, first-served means no advance reservations — show up and hope for space. Spring and fall are the seasons when this camp operates, avoiding both summer heat and winter snow closures.

Pack all your water. The primitive setup means no taps anywhere in camp, and with vault toilets as the only facilities, you'll want to arrive prepared for self-sufficient camping.

The Trail of a Hundred Giants sits a short drive away, offering wheelchair-accessible access to massive sequoias without the hiking commitment. This paved nature trail winds through either the Redwood or Long Meadow sequoia grove — both worth the detour from camp.
