The Camp

This is Big Bear's answer to group horse camping β€” one large site with room for 25 people and eight vehicles, plus five corrals that handle up to 10 horses. The setting feels more remote than developed Big Bear campgrounds, surrounded by pinyon pine and juniper with meadow openings that give horses room to move. Tables and fire rings with grills handle the basics, but you're hauling in your own water and packing out trash. Vault toilets are the only amenity beyond the corrals.

What to Know

The approach tells you what kind of place this is: rough, rocky road that demands 4WD or high-clearance vehicles. Group reservations open 12 months out, which matters since there's only one site. At $10 per night for the entire group, it's remarkably affordable for what amounts to a private base camp.

No water means planning your supply carefully β€” both for people and horses. The elevation puts you above most of Big Bear's pine belt, so nights stay cool even in summer.

Nearby

Big Bear Lake sits close enough for fishing, boating, and swimming runs. The real draw for hikers is access to the Sugarloaf National Recreation Trail, which climbs to 9,952 feet β€” the highest point in Big Bear Valley. It's described as fairly difficult, so factor that into day-hike planning.

San Bernardino sits about 45 minutes away for supply runs, though the rough access road means you'll want to arrive fully stocked.
