Amenities
The Camp
The campground spreads along French Meadows Reservoir's southern shore in mixed pine and fir forest. Sites come with the standard kit: picnic table, fire ring, and food locker, plus paved roads and parking spurs. A few sites accommodate wheelchairs. Flush and vault toilets are scattered throughout, along with drinking water spigots.
Several sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis, while others take reservations. The boat ramp sits adjacent to the campground β convenient for getting watercraft in without a long haul from your site.
On the Water
French Meadows Reservoir draws boaters, canoeists, and anglers looking for a high-country lake experience without the access drama of wilderness areas. Swimming is popular when summer temperatures climb. The North Fork American River flows nearby, offering additional fishing and swimming opportunities beyond the reservoir itself.
Trail Access
The surrounding area connects to hiking and biking trails, including routes into Granite Chief Wilderness and segments of the Western States Trail. The wilderness boundary sits just down the road, opening up terrain with aspen groves and mountain passes for hikers willing to put in some effort. The Western States Trail accommodates hikers, horseback riders, dirt bikes, and mountain bikers β a multi-use corridor that extends well beyond the immediate area.
Summer and fall seasons offer the most reliable access and weather, with those cool evenings providing relief from daytime heat.
