The Camp

The sites are scattered through pine and fir forest along Jackson Meadow Reservoir's western shore. Each comes with the standard picnic table and fire ring setup, positioned to take advantage of views across the water toward English Mountain and the Sierra Crest. The rolling forested valley setting keeps things scenic without feeling remote.

Being part of the larger Woodcamp Recreation Area means you're sharing the lake with other campers, but also means more amenities than you'd find at a backcountry spot. Flush toilets and potable water handle the basics.

On the Water

Jackson Meadow Reservoir handles the full range of water activities β€” boating, water skiing, swimming, and fishing for rainbow and brown trout. There's a designated swim beach and boat ramp within the recreation area, so you don't need to haul gear far or hunt for lake access.

Canoes work well here too, and the reservoir size gives paddlers room to explore without fighting motorboat wakes in every cove.

Beyond Camp

A half-mile nature trail runs through adjacent Woodcamp Campground if you want an easy walk without driving anywhere. More ambitious hikers can pick up the Pacific Crest Trail, which runs along the reservoir's east side.

The surrounding area draws hunters and mountain bikers, though you'll want to call the forest service at (530) 994-3401 for current conditions and any seasonal restrictions.

What to Know

Reservations are required, which tells you something about demand during peak season. The campground operates during summer and fall β€” expect it to fill up on weekends and holidays when the weather's good for water sports.
