The Camp

The terraced layout works in your favor here β€” all lower sites and some upper ones catch lake views through the deciduous canopy. Each of the 19 sites comes with decent privacy and shade, plus the standard kit: picnic table, fire ring with grill, paved parking, and a tent pad. Food lockers keep your supplies safe from the abundant local wildlife.

Two sets of vault toilets and water spigots serve the campground. No showers or hookups, but all sites handle small trailers and tents equally well.

What to Know

Boaters have made this place their own, especially the water skiing and jet skiing crowd. When lake levels allow informal mooring, expect company. The official boat ramp sits 4 miles away at Hirz Bay if you need proper launching facilities.

Anglers work the lake for trout, bass, catfish, Chinook salmon, and a surprising variety of other species including white sturgeon. The 365 miles of Shasta Lake shoreline provide plenty of water to explore.

Nearby

Lake Shasta Caverns operates daily tours from the Grey Rocks area on the same arm of the lake β€” a privately run operation worth checking out. For bigger views, Hirz Mountain Lookout climbs to 3,500 feet with panoramic coverage of Mount Shasta, Mount Lassen, and the surrounding country.

The nearest store is 21 miles away in Lakehead, so stock up before arrival. At 1,067 feet elevation with steep mountains rising around the shoreline, you're camping in the heart of California's largest national forest territory.
