Six primitive sites tucked into mixed conifers a quarter-mile below one of Mount Shasta's most photographed lakes. This is first-come camping for people who want quick access to Castle Lake's granite cirque without the crowds that hit the day-use area.

Amenities
The Camp
The campground sits in thick coniferous forest at 5,400 feet, close enough to Castle Lake that you can walk or drive the short distance down. Each of the six sites comes with a table and fire ring, plus vault toilets for the campground. You'll need to bring water. The setting keeps things primitive β this isn't the place for large RVs or trailers.
What to Know
No reservations, no fees, but there's a three-night limit. The campground typically opens around late May when snow clears and closes with the first heavy snows around November. Sites fill on a first-come basis, so weekend availability can be hit or miss during peak summer months.
The Lake
Castle Lake itself draws visitors for good reason β it's a glacial cirque lake with granite walls and clear water that invites swimming, fishing, and flat-water kayaking. The west shore stays public and has an easy shoreline trail for lake access.
A heads-up on the east side: the traditional trail to Heart Lake and Little Castle Lake crosses onto posted private property immediately after leaving the parking area. The entire 640-acre section is privately owned with no legal public access, so stick to the west shore and shoreline trail to avoid trespassing issues.
