The Camp

The campground sprawls across a forested basin with multiple single-family sites that accommodate tents and small RVs. Each site comes with a table and campfire ring with grill, plus the luxury of shade from mature conifers throughout the day. Vault toilets handle the basics, but this is primitive camping β€” no hookups, no showers, no hand-holding.

The campground itself has paved internal roads, a civilized touch after the beating your vehicle takes getting here.

What to Know

Black Mountain Road is the gatekeeper. The Forest Service warns it's in poor condition and recommends 4WD with minimum 6-inch clearance. They're not being dramatic β€” this narrow, rough dirt track will test your vehicle and your commitment. Drive at your own risk, as they say.

Reservations are required, which makes sense for a group campground this remote. Spring and fall offer the best weather windows at this elevation.

Access and Activities

The campground serves as basecamp for Black Mountain Trail, a 3.6-mile moderately strenuous route open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horses. The trail climbs through Black Mountain's forested slopes and delivers views of Banning Pass and Mt. San Gorgonio before connecting to the Pacific Crest Trail.

Boulder climbing opportunities exist in the area, though specifics aren't detailed. The campground name suggests plenty of granite to work with.

Idyllwild sits 14 miles south for fuel, food, and supplies. San Bernardino is 50 miles northwest, but Idyllwild's mountain town amenities are the practical resupply option.
