Big Meadow Group Campground sits at 6,460 feet in a mixed forest of white fir, red fir, lodgepole pine, and quaking aspen, with granite outcrops scattered throughout. This is group camping only—one reservation covers the whole site for $100 per night. The forest setting and elevation put you in proper Sierra territory without the crowds of the more famous destinations.

The Camp
The campground occupies a single large site designed for groups, surrounded by the classic mid-elevation Sierra forest mix. Granite outcrops break up the woodland, creating natural gathering spots and giving the place some geological character. At this elevation, you're high enough to escape the valley heat but not so high that weather becomes a constant concern.
The quaking aspen scattered among the conifers means fall color if you time it right, typically late September into early October depending on the year.
What to Know
Reservations through Recreation.gov are required—no walk-ups. The $100 nightly fee covers the entire group site, making it economical for larger parties but potentially expensive for smaller groups unless you can fill it.
At 6,460 feet, nights stay cool even in summer, and snow can linger into late spring or arrive early in fall. Check current conditions before heading up, especially outside peak summer months.
The campground comes with picnic tables, but you'll want to verify what other amenities are available when booking, as group sites can vary widely in their setup and facilities.
