The Woodpecker Nature Trail is a 0.9-mile loop from the Bear Valley Trailhead through Douglas fir and bay laurel forest and a meadow alongside Bear Valley Creek, with an interpretive trail guide describing the plants and animals of the valley. It's the shortest loop from the main visitor area and a good introduction to the forest habitat.
Overview
The loop circles through a cross-section of the Bear Valley ecosystem โ dense mixed forest with a creek-side section through willow and alder, opening into a meadow where coyotes, bobcats, and great blue herons are regularly seen. The interpretive guide (available at the trailhead or visitor center) describes what you're looking at.
What to Expect
Flat to gently rolling terrain on a dirt path with tree roots. 100 feet of elevation change. The forest stays cool and shaded; the meadow is more open. Year-round accessible; muddy after rain.
Tips & Logistics
Starts at the Bear Valley Trailhead, south end of the Bear Valley parking lot. Dogs are not allowed. No permit required. Takes about 30โ45 minutes. Pick up the interpretive guide at the visitor center for the most out of the walk.
