The Elephant Seal Overlook Trail is a 0.5-mile round trip from the Chimney Rock parking area to a coastal bluff with a viewpoint over a northern elephant seal colony. Seals are present and visible year-round, with the largest numbers during pupping season from December through March.
Overview
Northern elephant seals recolonized the Point Reyes coast starting in the 1980s, and the Drakes Beach colony is now one of the more accessible elephant seal viewing sites in California. The overlook trail drops briefly from the parking area to a bluff above the beach where the seals haul out.
What to Expect
Very short walk on a dirt path. 50 feet of descent. The overlook provides clear views of the beach colony below. Numbers and activity vary by season โ late January through March is peak pupping season with maximum animal activity. Outside breeding season, seals are present but less numerous.
Tips & Logistics
The Chimney Rock parking area is about 45 minutes from Bear Valley via Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. The access road has some potholed sections. Dogs are not allowed. No permit required. Binoculars are helpful.
