The Earthquake Trail is a paved 0.6-mile loop at the Bear Valley Visitor Center that walks you through the evidence of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake along the San Andreas Fault. A fence running across the trail shows the 16 feet of lateral displacement that occurred in the quake.
Overview
The 1906 earthquake shifted the land along the fault up to 20 feet in places; the fence line on this trail shows a measured 16-foot offset between its two ends. Interpretive signs describe fault mechanics, the 1906 event, and what the landscape tells us about ongoing movement. It's the most accessible introduction to the San Andreas Fault at Point Reyes.
What to Expect
Paved loop, 0.6 miles, minimal elevation change. Mostly accessible for wheelchairs, though pavement depressions affect some sections. Starts at the northeast corner of the Bear Valley Trailhead parking lot.
