Mount Wittenberg from Bear Valley is a strenuous 4.8- to 6.5-mile round trip that climbs 1,300 feet through mixed Douglas fir and oak forest to the highest point on the Point Reyes Peninsula at 1,407 feet. Multiple loop options use different combinations of the Z Ranch, Sky, and Meadow trails on the descent.
Overview
Mount Wittenberg is the high point of Inverness Ridge, and climbing it from Bear Valley involves a direct, steep ascent through dense mixed forest. The summit itself sits in a thicket of fir trees that limits the views โ the best vistas come from openings along the ridge near the top rather than the summit itself.
What to Expect
Steep climbing on the ascent trails from Bear Valley. 1,300 feet of gain over 2.4 miles. The forest is cool and shaded on the way up; the ridge can be open and windy at the top. Multiple return routes allow loop variations of different lengths.
Tips & Logistics
Starts at the Bear Valley Trailhead. Dogs are not allowed. No permit required. The Sky Trailhead route (see separate listing) is the easier ascent. Fall offers the best chance of clear ridge views. Allow 3โ4 hours for the shorter loop options.
