Bass Lake is a small freshwater lake in the coastal hills south of the seashore, reached by a moderate 6-mile round trip from the Palomarin Trailhead through coastal scrub with ocean bluff views. It's a good day hike destination on its own and a natural stopping point on the way to Wildcat Beach.

Overview

Ocean views from the bluff sections are open and wide. Most of the route is within the Phillip Burton Wilderness.

What to Expect

Moderate elevation change over rolling coastal terrain. The trail is well-maintained through coastal scrub and grassland with intermittent trees. Poison oak is common along the trail margins. No lifeguards or facilities at Bass Lake.

Tips & Logistics

Palomarin Trailhead is 35 minutes from Bear Valley. Parking fills early on summer weekends. Dogs are not allowed. No permit required. Spring brings wildflowers on the bluff sections. The Wildcat Beach backcountry camp is further along the same route for those planning an overnight.
