The Woodward Valley Loop is a strenuous 13-mile circuit from Bear Valley that descends from Inverness Ridge to the coast, traverses the shoreline to Sculptured Beach, and returns through the valley. Much of the route burned in the 2020 Woodward Fire, and the coastal section near Sculptured Beach has been affected by recent storm damage.
Overview
This is the most ambitious day loop from Bear Valley โ climbing the ridge, traversing the coastal bluffs, and returning through the valley gives you the full spectrum of the seashore's landscapes. The Woodward Fire reshaped the lower valley and coastal scrub sections, opening views and creating recovery habitat. Check current conditions for beach section closures before planning this route.
What to Expect
About 1,200 feet of elevation gain, mostly on the ridge ascent. The coastal section includes the approach to Sculptured and Kelham Beaches, which have been affected by storm damage and may be closed โ check the park website. The Bear Valley return is flat. No potable water beyond the trailhead.
Tips & Logistics
Starts at the Bear Valley Trailhead. Dogs are not allowed. No permit required for day hiking; backcountry camp permits required for overnight stays. Allow a full day โ 7โ8 hours minimum. Fall is the most reliable season for clear conditions.
