The Tomales Point Trail to Windy Gap covers 2 miles round trip from Pierce Ranch to a low saddle on the ridge where tule elk are frequently sighted. It's the shortest introduction to the Tomales Point tule elk reserve — enough to see the landscape and likely spot the herd without committing to the full 9-mile round trip.
Overview
Windy Gap is a natural corridor where elk often move between the eastern and western slopes of the ridge. A short walk from Pierce Ranch on the main Tomales Point Trail reaches it quickly, and the open coastal grassland gives good sight lines for spotting elk. Bay and ocean views are visible from the ridge.
What to Expect
Flat to gently rolling terrain on compacted dirt. Fog is common in summer; fall offers the clearest conditions. Wind is reliable at the gap and stronger on exposed days.
Tips & Logistics
Trailhead at the north end of Pierce Point Road, 35–40 minutes from Bear Valley. Dogs are not allowed. No permit required. Good option for families or visitors with limited time who want to see the elk reserve without the full ridge hike.
