Overview

This short route follows the beginning of the Rift Zone Trail south from Bear Valley, crossing a stream and passing through the meadow and forest mix of the fault valley floor. The shutter ridges and diverted stream channels are visible evidence of fault movement. The route ends at the Vedanta Society Retreat access road โ€” beyond that point, the trail crosses private property open only during limited hours.

What to Expect

Flat, easy walking on a wide trail. The terrain shows the classic San Andreas Fault features: the flat, straight valley, offset drainages, and the parallel ridges on either side. Year-round accessible.

Tips & Logistics

Starts at the Bear Valley Trailhead. Dogs are not allowed. No permit required. Can be combined with the Earthquake Trail (also at Bear Valley) for a short geology-focused outing.
