the Muddy Hollow Trail

Point Reyes National Seashore, CA

The Muddy Hollow Trail is an easy 4-mile out-and-back from the Limantour Road corridor through wetlands and riparian forest to Limantour Beach, passing through tule elk habitat along the way. It's one of the more reliable places in the seashore to see elk on a day hike.

Overview

The trail follows Muddy Hollow Creek through red alder and willow riparian corridor, then opens into wetland habitat before reaching the beach. Tule elk from the Limantour herd frequent the grasslands along this route. Birds are diverse throughout, from waterbirds at the marsh edge to songbirds in the riparian corridor.

What to Expect

Minimal elevation change on a mostly flat trail. Spring and early summer can bring tall grasses and new growth that encroaches onto the trail โ€” long pants are recommended then. The trail ends at Limantour Beach, a sheltered bayshore beach on Drakes Bay.

Tips & Logistics

The Muddy Hollow Trailhead is about 15 minutes from Bear Valley via Limantour Road. Dogs are not allowed on the trail, but are allowed on leash on Limantour Beach east of the main beach access. No permit required. Elk viewing is best in early morning.
