The Meadow-Horse Trails Loop is a 6.5-mile circuit starting at Bear Valley that climbs 840 feet to the crest of Inverness Ridge and returns through Douglas fir forest and meadow. Much of this area burned in the 2020 Woodward Fire, which has opened up views that didn't previously exist and created a mosaic of fire recovery.
Overview
The route starts at the Bear Valley Trailhead and ascends the east side of Inverness Ridge via the Horse Trail, reaching the ridgeline with views west toward the coast. The Meadow Trail returns through forest and open clearings. The Morgan Horse Ranch, which maintains horses for patrol and trail work in the seashore, is in the Bear Valley area near the start.
What to Expect
The climb to the ridge is steady and takes the most effort. Burned areas from the 2020 Woodward Fire have reduced the closed-in forest character of some sections, opening views that previously didn't exist from this trail. Exposed roots and rocks on some sections. Most of the loop is within the Phillip Burton Wilderness.
Tips & Logistics
Starts at the main Bear Valley Trailhead, at the south end of the Bear Valley parking lot. Dogs are not allowed. No permit required. Fall is best for clear ridge views; spring brings new wildflowers in the burn recovery areas. Allow 4–5 hours.
