The Marshall Beach Trail descends 1.2 miles to a 400-foot pocket beach on the western shore of Tomales Bay, gaining about 300 feet on the return. The bay-facing exposure gives Marshall Beach some shelter from the dominant northwest wind, making it calmer than Point Reyes Beach on most days.
Overview
This short trail drops through coastal scrub and past a small pine grove to a quiet beach on Tomales Bay's western shore. The bay provides protection from the open Pacific swell โ you can actually sit on this beach without being sandblasted. It's in the northern seashore, close to Tomales Point.
What to Expect
The trail loses about 300 feet on the way to the beach, which means gaining it on the way back. Surface is dirt through scrub and grassland. The beach itself is rocky at the edges and sandy at center, with tidal fluctuations. No overnight parking at the trailhead.
Tips & Logistics
Driving from Bear Valley takes about 25 minutes via Pierce Point Road. Dogs are not allowed. No permit required. Year-round accessible. Best on days when northwest wind makes the ocean-facing beaches uncomfortable.
