The Muir Woods Main Trail follows Redwood Creek for 2 miles through old-growth coast redwoods in a canyon north of San Francisco, starting at the visitor center on a flat, firm trail suitable for most visitors. Multiple bridge crossings let you choose a shorter loop or the full out-and-back.
Overview
Muir Woods National Monument preserves a rare stand of old-growth coast redwoods in a sheltered canyon on the southern slopes of Mount Tamalpais. The Main Trail is the access corridor — a level walk through the grove that begins at the visitor center and follows the creek deeper into the canyon before looping back via the other bank.
What to Expect
The trail surface is a mix of wooden boardwalk, asphalt, and packed native soil — firm and well-maintained throughout. The grove begins immediately at the entrance and the largest trees are visible within the first 0.25 miles. The canyon is cool and shaded regardless of outside temperature; dress in layers. Two hours is ample for the full loop at a relaxed pace.
Tips & Logistics
Advance parking reservations are required — this is enforced, not advisory. Make them on the park website before your trip. The monument is open year-round. Entrance fee applies. Dogs are not allowed. The visitor center has water and restrooms. Connectivity inside the canyon is minimal, so download maps and reservations before arriving.
