Overview

The loop combines the Laguna and Coast trails along the outer edge of the park above Drakes Bay. Coastal scrub and grassland dominate the terrain, with views expanding as you gain the higher sections. Santa Maria Beach is accessible at a couple of points along the Coast Trail section โ€” a narrow strip of sand inside Drakes Bay, sheltered from the main Pacific swell.

What to Expect

Moderate elevation change over rolling coastal terrain. The route passes near Coast Camp (a walk-in campground requiring reservations). Fog is common in summer; fall offers the clearest conditions. No shade on open coastal sections.

Tips & Logistics

The Laguna Trailhead is about 15 minutes from Bear Valley via Limantour Road. Dogs are not allowed. No permit required for day hiking; backcountry camping at Coast Camp requires a reservation. Allow 3โ€“4 hours for the loop.
