the Estero Trail to Home Bay

Point Reyes National Seashore, CA

The Estero Trail to Home Bay is an easy 2.4-mile round trip from the Estero Trailhead through grassland to a footbridge at the head of Home Bay, where the estero narrows. Egrets, herons, bat rays, and leopard sharks make this one of the better wildlife-watching walks on the peninsula.

Overview

The trail runs through rolling coastal grassland and an area recovering from a former Christmas tree farm, reaching the footbridge at Home Bay where the estero channel is narrow enough to bridge. The benches at the footbridge overlook the water โ€” a good spot to watch shorebirds and look for rays in the shallows.

What to Expect

Minimal elevation change on a mostly flat dirt trail. The estero is visible intermittently on the approach and directly below at the footbridge. Summer fog keeps temperatures cool even when the coast is socked in. Year-round trail.

Tips & Logistics

Driving to the Estero Trailhead from Bear Valley takes about 25 minutes. Dogs are not allowed. No permit required. Good at any time of day; early morning reduces glare on the water for wildlife watching.
