The Estero Trail to Drakes Head or Sunset Beach covers 7.8 to 8.8 miles round trip from the Estero Trailhead, tracking through cattle pastures above Drakes Estero to reach either the headland at Drakes Head or the sand spit at Sunset Beach. The estero below supports egrets, herons, bat rays, and leopard sharks visible at low tide.
Overview
Drakes Estero is one of the most productive coastal wetlands in the park โ an estuary system visible throughout much of this route. The trail passes through working ranch pasture before the terrain opens toward the bay, with views of both Drakes Estero and Estero de Limantour as you near the end.
What to Expect
The trail gains moderate elevation over rolling coastal grassland. The final sections near Drakes Head become less maintained, resembling cattle tracks more than formal hiking trail. Sunset Beach is a low-tide sand spit; Drakes Head offers views across the estero. Neither destination is well-suited for high tide visits.
