Overview

Much of this loop passes through terrain regenerating after the 1995 Vision Fire, which burned through much of the northern seashore. The young forest and scrub habitat that's grown up since supports good wildlife. Tule elk from the Limantour herd are commonly seen in the grassland sections.

What to Expect

The route starts at the Muddy Hollow Trailhead and loops through several habitat types. One creek crossing about 8 feet wide has no bridge — wet feet are likely in winter and spring; check conditions before committing to the full loop. The elevation gain is moderate spread over the full 7.4 miles.

Tips & Logistics

Muddy Hollow Trailhead is about 15 minutes from Bear Valley via Limantour Road. Dogs are not allowed. No permit required. Spring is optimal for wildflowers and elk; fall offers the clearest days. Allow 4–5 hours.
