Overview

This route continues past the footbridge at the end of the Abbotts Lagoon Trail, crossing the dune system to the beach at the north end of Point Reyes Beach — an 11-mile stretch of exposed Pacific coastline with heavy surf. The lagoon section offers good birding; the beach section is exposed and windswept.

What to Expect

The first 0.9 miles to the footbridge are flat and maintained. Beyond the bridge, the trail enters the Phillip Burton Wilderness and crosses dunes on an unmaintained sandy route to the beach. The dune vegetation is fragile; stay on the defined path. The beach itself is not safe for swimming — sneaker waves and strong surf are hazards year-round.

Tips & Logistics

Snowy plover nesting restrictions apply on weekends and holidays between May 30 and Labor Day in the dune area. Dogs are not allowed. Allow about 20–25 minutes of driving from Bear Valley. No permit required for day hiking.
