Overview

Abbotts Lagoon sits between Pierce Point Road and the coast, separated from the Pacific by a narrow band of sand dunes. The three connected lagoons support different bird species depending on salinity โ€” shorebirds and waterfowl concentrate here from fall through winter. Spring brings lupine and other coastal wildflowers along the trail margins.

What to Expect

The trail is flat, on compacted dirt, gaining minimal elevation over 0.9 miles to the footbridge. The footbridge marks the boundary with the Phillip Burton Wilderness and the start of unmaintained sand trail toward the beach. This route ends at the bridge.

Tips & Logistics

Driving time from Bear Valley is about 20โ€“25 minutes via Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and Pierce Point Road. Dogs are not allowed. Fall and winter are the best seasons for birds; spring for wildflowers. Summer brings fog and cool temperatures. No permit required.
