Pierce Ranch is the best-preserved 19th-century dairy ranch on the Point Reyes Peninsula, operating from the 1850s until 1973 and now open for a short self-guided walk through the remaining buildings. Allow 20–30 minutes for the ranch complex and about an hour of drive time round trip from Bear Valley.

Overview

The ranch sits at the north end of the Tomales Point area, surrounded by the tule elk reserve that replaced its cattle operations. The structures include the main ranch house (dating to 1856, one of the oldest in Marin County), barns, dairy buildings, and outbuildings — all on the National Register of Historic Places. Interpretive signs describe what dairying looked like on the Point Reyes Peninsula before the national seashore was established.

What to Expect

The self-guided path through the ranch complex is short — plan on 20 to 30 minutes. The area is accessible when Pierce Point Road is open. Tule elk are frequently visible in the surrounding pasture.

Tips & Logistics

Pierce Point Road runs north from Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and adds about 35–40 minutes of driving from Bear Valley. The Tomales Point trailhead is at the north end of the same road, making this a natural pairing if you're hiking out to see the elk herd.
