The Old Pinnacles Trail to Balconies Cave is a 5.4-mile out-and-back from the east entrance that follows the valley floor along Chalone Creek to Balconies Cave, passing below Machete Ridge and crossing six seasonal creek drainages. It's the quieter east-side approach to the cave, gaining only 350 feet.
Overview
This route crosses the park's valley from east to west at low elevation, tracking through chaparral and riparian habitat beneath the dramatic vertical face of Machete Ridge before reaching the Balconies Cave canyon. It's a fundamentally different experience from the High Peaks routes — less strenuous, more creek-walking.
What to Expect
Six creek crossings along the way run seasonal; wading may be necessary in winter and early spring. Balconies Cave at the end requires a flashlight and may be closed due to flooding — the moderate difficulty rating comes partly from the cave navigation and route length rather than elevation. The cave posts closure status at the trailhead.
Tips & Logistics
Start at the east entrance near the Peaks View parking area. Late fall through spring is the recommended window — before summer heat, and after spring snowmelt reduces creek crossing difficulty. Carry a flashlight. No water on trail. Allow 3 hours for the round trip.
