Overview

The North Wilderness area sits above the main Pinnacles formations on the west side, accessed via a route branching from the Chaparral Trailhead. The trail climbs to ridge tops with views across the High Peaks and Chalone Creek drainage, then loops back through Balconies Cave. It sees a fraction of the traffic of the standard routes.

What to Expect

Much of this route is marked by rock cairns rather than a clear tread — lose the markers and navigation becomes difficult. The trail is officially classified as strenuous and recommended for experienced hikers only. The Balconies Cave section on the return requires a flashlight and may involve wading in winter.

Tips & Logistics

Check trail and cave conditions before attempting — the cave can be closed due to flooding. No water along the trail. Allow a full day. Spring and fall recommended; summer heat makes this kind of extended exposure dangerous. No dogs allowed.
