The Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop is a 2.2-mile circuit from the Bear Gulch Day Use Area that passes through Bear Gulch Cave and loops above the reservoir with 500 feet of gain. It's the most popular short hike at Pinnacles and the best accessible cave experience in the park.
Overview
Bear Gulch Cave is a talus cave formed by collapsed boulders wedged across the canyon — a cool, dark passage requiring a flashlight and some scrambling. Moses Spring Trail approaches from below; the Rim Trail returns above the canyon, providing clear views of the reservoir and the rock formations overhead.
What to Expect
The loop starts and ends at the Bear Gulch Day Use Area. Moses Spring Trail climbs gradually through the cave passage; Rim Trail returns along the canyon rim. The cave closes seasonally to protect roosting Townsend's big-eared bats in winter, and opens in stages as the colony moves through different sections. Low ceilings and slippery rocks throughout the cave. Check current access status before visiting.
Tips & Logistics
The park posts current cave status online and at the trailhead. A flashlight is required — a headlamp is easier than a phone light for navigating with both hands. Allow 1.5–2 hours. No water on trail. Dogs are not allowed. The day use area has water and restrooms.
