Kings Creek Meadow Viewpoint

Lassen Volcanic National Park, CA

The Kings Creek Meadow Viewpoint is a roadside pullout along the Lassen Volcanic Highway where the road briefly opens onto a wide mountain meadow at roughly 7,000 feet. Kings Creek flows through here year-round, fed by Lassen Peak snowmelt, and the meadow shifts from green to gold across the season.

Overview

This is a roadside stop rather than a hike β€” a meadow viewpoint with room to pull over and look. What makes it worth stopping for is the variety of what you might see: deer grazing at dawn, Clark's Nutcrackers in the pines, the occasional black bear moving through the meadow fringes. Lassen Peak frames the northern horizon.

What to Expect

The viewpoint is directly adjacent to the Kings Creek Picnic Area, about 0.25 miles north of the Kings Creek Falls Trailhead. There's no formal loop here, but the trailhead to Kings Creek Falls is a short walk south if you want to add mileage. The meadow is wettest in spring and early summer when snowmelt is actively feeding the creek.

Tips & Logistics

For wildlife, early morning is the best time to stop. The viewpoint is accessible when the main Lassen Volcanic Highway is open, typically late May or June through October or November. Bears are occasionally seen in the area; standard food storage rules apply.
