Overview

This loop starts and ends at the Bear Gulch Day Use Area on the east side and takes in the High Peaks formation from the east, including the Steep and Narrow section with carved handholds. The descent through Bear Gulch offers a marked change of character — lower sections through meadows and grove drainages feel almost lush compared to the exposed rock above.

What to Expect

The route climbs via the High Peaks Trail, traverses the Steep and Narrow section, and returns through Bear Gulch. Bear Gulch Cave is open seasonally — it closes in winter to protect roosting Townsend's big-eared bats. A partial or full closure is common in winter; check current status at the visitor center or park website. Even when the cave is closed, the loop can be completed via the Rim Trail above.

Tips & Logistics

Most hikers take 4–5 hours. No water on trail. Afternoon temperatures on exposed peaks can be extreme in summer. The cave section requires a flashlight when open. Spring is optimal — best mid-week to avoid crowds. No dogs allowed.
