The High Peaks to Balconies Cave Loop is an 8.4-mile west-side route that combines the park's signature volcanic rock formations with a talus cave, gaining 1,540 feet over a full day's walk. It's the most comprehensive single route at Pinnacles, connecting the dramatic spires of the High Peaks to the boulder-choked canyon of Balconies.
Overview
This loop from the Chaparral Trailhead takes in both major feature types in the park: the volcanic High Peaks spires and the talus caves formed by boulder falls. The High Peaks traverse includes the Steep and Narrow section with carved handholds. The Balconies Cave requires a flashlight and occasional awkward scrambling.
What to Expect
Elevation gain is spread across the route; the High Peaks section is the most strenuous. Balconies Cave can involve wading in winter and may close temporarily due to flooding — check cave status before committing to the full loop. The Chaparral Trailhead on the west side is accessed via Highway 146; parking is limited.
Tips & Logistics
Allow a full day. No water on trail — fill up at the Chaparral area before starting. Best in spring and fall; summer midday in the rocks is genuinely dangerous. Cave closures are posted at the trailhead and on the park website. No dogs allowed.
