Condor Gulch Trail

Pinnacles National Park, CA

The Condor Gulch Trail climbs steeply from the east entrance to a viewpoint overlooking the High Peaks formation, gaining 1,100 feet over 1.7 miles on exposed switchbacks with no shade. It's the primary approach to the High Peaks loop from the east — and one of the most reliable places in the park to watch California condors soar.

Overview

The trail ascends through chaparral above Bear Gulch, with the volcanic rock spires of the High Peaks rising into view as you gain elevation. California condors — reintroduced to Pinnacles starting in 2003 — are regularly spotted soaring above the formations on thermal updrafts. The Condor Gulch Viewpoint at 1 mile is a worthwhile destination even if you're not continuing to the High Peaks.

What to Expect

Steep from the start, with almost no flat sections. Packed dirt and loose rock on exposed switchbacks. The trail connects at the top to the High Peaks Trail for loop options. The high rock faces amplify heat — summer temperatures in the 90s and above are common.

Tips & Logistics

This is the standard east-side approach to the High Peaks. The viewpoint at 1 mile makes a reasonable turnaround if you don't want the full loop. Start early in summer. Bring at least 1.5 liters per person. No water on trail. Dogs are not allowed.
