The Bench Trail to South Wilderness is a 6.5-mile out-and-back along the park's valley floor, following Chalone Creek south through valley oak groves and open chaparral to the park's southern boundary. It sees far less foot traffic than the High Peaks routes and offers some of the best birding in Pinnacles.
Overview
This route follows the eastern valley through riparian habitat along Chalone Creek. The valley oak groves attract songbirds and raptors, and the open terrain makes wildlife spotting easier than on the more crowded routes. A good option when the peaks are packed on spring weekends.
What to Expect
The trail starts at Peaks View day use area and runs mostly flat, gaining 300 feet over the full distance. A section between Peaks View and the South Wilderness Trail junction is wheelchair accessible. Beyond the junction, trail continues to the park's southern boundary as unmaintained route — navigation becomes less straightforward past that point.
Tips & Logistics
Year-round trail, but summer midday heat in the valley can be severe. No water along the route. Best in early morning for birds. Spring brings wildflowers in the grassland sections. The south wilderness section is suited for hikers comfortable with some route-finding.
